Nuggets Reborn

So yes, I have crossed the 300 days mark in the Dutch Land. A lot has happened, because stuff keeps happening, you know. But rather than a review, here are some observations/insights in general which have been on my mind (and WhatsApp, and Twitter !)

* Create products and stories. Destroy concepts and ideologies.

*Rationality and intellectual honesty are independent of credentials, and raise the effective IQ. (An average Dutch guy is more rational than many IIT/IIM graduates I know). Corollary: better decisions defeat raw analytical power in the long term.

*If you are offended about something, you are clinging to an illusion.

*Better to be clearly wrong than vaguely right.

*Don’t think different. Just think for yourself.

*Pray for what you have. Not for what you want. It’s called Gratitude.

*I am not distracted. You are boring.

*Engagement is commitment. Take the first step. Or, for many people, avoid the first step.

*Highest impact entrepreneurs make tools for creators.

*Defining mental clarity – when you can criticize your beliefs better than anyone else.

*The more things you want, the less you are likely to get.

*If no one makes fun of you, you don’t have (or express) original ideas. You repress yourself to fit in.

*A great strategist will spend least amount of time strategizing.

*You hire a book to enhance your mental models. If it fails, you should fire it. You want quality, not quantity, of hires.

*A well-thought out idea – is less and less distinguishable from execution.

*The less the apparent value, the more effort needed to sell a product.

*If you point at technicalities, your central point is weak.

*Learning new things improves knowledge of older things.

*Doing projects in which you cannot fail is largely a waste of time.

*When people say ‘I truly believe’ – it is a marker they are boring.

*You can learn more in 1 year of a startup than 5 years of a university.

*’Living in a simulation’ is the new ‘Living in a dream’.

*Career strategy -> find what is weird about you and make it 100x.

*Some people should call you crazy – some of the time.

*There is a time to let things happen, and a time to make things happen.

*In MOOCs, instructors talking to an actual class seem way more interesting than those you know are talking to a camera.

*Winning the wrong battles is worse than losing the right ones.

*Sometimes, strategy is just the set of actions you feel most emotionally comfortable about.

*Great art solves a problem – connecting to yourself.

If you enjoyed these, or didn’t, I have more:

Nuggets Reloaded

The post Nuggets was well-received. So, continuing my habit of noting down crazy things which occur to me from time to time, here are more of those. Don’t take any too seriously !

Here we go –

*Humor and listening.. create the space where dissent can exist without destruction.

*When I want someone to listen, they assume I want them to talk.

*People want to talk about their problems, they already know the solution.

*Triangles are like humans, they have an in-circle, outer circle and even an ex-circle.

*The thing I like about kids that they are not ashamed to show how happy they are.

*What you can’t do can be a better guide to career planning than what you can.

*We need failure to keep growing. Being in a state of constant superiority would bore us to death.

*Better to disarm than to attack.

*Some people are not workaholics, but reward-a-holics.

*If you adjust to a problem, you will never solve it.

*In the short term, betting on pure chance is better than betting on the goodness of people.

*Gambling is not bad, losing in gambling is bad.

*Women: the only addiction which demands that you leave all others.

*I think religion was invented by some very smart atheists.

*Earning is a science, but spending is an art.

*Ask not what the system can do for you, ask what you can get done from the system.

*If you keep your warmth to yourself, you burn !

*The lonelier one feels, the louder one plays the music.

*I hope we played more of truth and care.

*I don’t want to change the world.. but a few adjustments will do.

*If you always over-perform, you are always underpaid.

*Its easy to wash away sins, its the good deeds which cause the trouble.

*What to do is difficult to plan, what not to do is difficult to execute.

*The problem with ageing is that you have to act like a grown up when you know you aren’t !

*A society can be corrupt only if each individual is.

*If one is serious about work, one is serious about rest.

*Efficiency is not the virtue of an artist.

*Respect women. But not so much that you only respect them.

*Breaking-up is better than breaking down. But its far better to break-even.

*A young man should find someone to ruffle his hair – while he still has them.

Do share your thoughts 🙂

About the pic: Met a Lithuanian girl in Paris. She took me to this bookshop near the Notre-Dame which also had a piano. She played beautifully.

In the B-School classroom, though there is an effort to listen and understand, the mind wanders and I jot down thoughts. So here I present some chosen nuggets. Almost all which came to mind without any effort – some ideas might not mean much, some might be abstruse, but some might be fun !

*Never let a teacher interfere with your learning.

*Sometimes the only thing I learn from failures is that they happen.

*If people are places, language is the ticket.

*Sometimes I think God is a painter, sometimes I think He is a cartoonist.

*The problem with ageing is that you have to act like a grown up when you know you aren’t !

*If someone tells you the answers, it greatly reduces the chances of you really knowing.

*When we know we are actually inferior or superior, does it bother? Facts are ok, not accepting them may not be.

*Sometimes laughing can be tiring.

*The problem is that people don’t fall in love.

*It would be enough if people were prepared for the expected.

*One should know when to talk in other person’s language, and when to make the other talk in his.

*One must never say sorry except, of course, when one does not mean it.

*Be a person of content, presentation will follow.

*Since I am pursuing postgraduate degree in management, I subscribe to The Economic Times now. I read Dilbert.

*The problem is that people truth a lot.

*Toughest assignment – “Figure yourself out”.

*People are basically egoistic, so praise and criticism will always affect them.

*“If they are gone, they were never really yours” – my philosophy for hair loss.

*Success makes you sexy.

*Ambition, competition, can make you stupid.

*They say – “Guest talk is compulsory.” I hear – “It’s not worth listening to.”

*Never give simple advice.

*We compare when we don’t like something, we compare it with others to make us feel good.

*Important interview is not what you will give to McKinsey, but what you will give to yourself when you die.

*There is some part of us which is pure.

*Useless talk is a source of great happiness.

Hope you liked them. Do share your ideas 🙂
