Burning Money

May 9, 2011 § Leave a comment

A series of thinly connected events.

A conversation at a pizza shop.

Friend to me: This guy did not make it to a B-School, but after some effort he is likely to get into Customs. He says that these MBAs act so smart, he will show them. He will make more money in a month than they do in a year.
Me: Hmm.. bribes?
Friend: Of course. Government officials in the Electricity board get crores that way. And they still use a scooter, and splurge the money on their daughter’s wedding. An IAS officer can get upto 300-400 crores in a lifetime.
Me: Ok, he is your friend, so I won’t say anything, but how can a person be proud of such money?

News in Today’s paper at Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Translated, the headline means, “Due to fear of search, man burns notes worth Rs. 5 million”.

A line from a famous book, taken from this speech:
“But you look on and you cry that money corrupted him. Did it? Or did he corrupt his money?

This line comes to my mind again and again.
